Janet Palmer Hamel
When Janet applied to UVa, she was living in Springfield, Virginia. While growing up, however, she lived in Hawaii, Italy, England, and Washington DC. As an undergraduate, she served on the First Year Council and was active in the Resident Staff Program before becoming its first female Co-Chair. She also worked as a Tutor Counselor in the University’s Transition Program, played Women’s Basketball, sang with the Charlottesville Oratorio Society, and was a member of the Raven Society, IMP, and Tilka. For her activities and leadership while at UVA she was awarded the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. She has two degrees from Virginia: an undergraduate degree in Government, and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. She went on to work in federal, state and local government, ending her service with the City of Houston’s Office of the Budget. She currently lives in Houston, Texas with her husband and four children, three of whom graduated from UVA.
