In 1969, amidst a vibrant backdrop of social and political change, a lawsuit was brought by four women against the University of Virginia, the last public university in the United States to admit women. The lawsuit alleged that it was unlawful to deny entry based on sex, and the court ruled in the women’s favor. The following fall, 367 trailblazers arrived on Grounds, the first class to coeducate UVA. Gail Burrell Gerry, a member of the class, recently published a book with UVA Press about the experience.

Here to Stay: The Story of the Class of Women Who Coeducated the University of Virginia explores how the university prepared for the women’s arrival, and most poignantly, what it felt like to those individuals who were on the front lines of historic, institutional change.

Last May, Gail previewed her book at her class’s 50th Reunion celebration. And while there was laughter, tears, dancing, and singing, it was clear that there is a lot more to discuss. Excitingly, early readers of Here to Stay agree and have expressed a desire to continue the conversation.

This session will be almost totally interactive, with small groups and light facilitation. Groups will change so participants can interact with a variety of other session attendees. A wine and cheese reception will cap off the afternoon.

While this session is free and open to all, space permitting, registration is required. Alumni from the Classes of 1974 and 1975 (congrats on 50 years!) will be offered first registration, but there will be plenty to discuss for anyone who’s interested in attending.

You don’t need to have read the book or be a UVA Alumnus to attend. Please join us for what promises to be a fun-filled conversation that is sure to jog a few memories and remind you of youthful spring days of yore! Copies of Here to Stay will be available at this session for purchase from the UVA Bookstore (UVA Alumni Association members receive a10% discount).

This session is co-sponsored by Gail Burrell Gerry, author, (class of 1974) and the UVA Library.
