Holly Peters
Holly Peters followed her older brothers to Charlottesville from Chester, Virginia. She was a Resident Advisor and active in the Counselors Committee on Human Sexuality. After graduating with a B.A. in English and Religious Studies she worked in Memphis at the Women’s Resource Center, a United Methodist Church project. Her plans for divinity school were derailed by her growing interest in feminism.
She was Director of the ACLU of Tennessee for three years and drawn to the legal profession. After law school she worked at the Legal Aid Society in Roanoke where she focused on family law, including domestic violence. After thirteen years, she left briefly to adopt her son. She then opened a solo practice devoted to representing children in foster care and contested custody cases as a guardian ad litem.
Her retirement has been spent singing in community choirs and volunteering in a variety of non-profit settings. Holly and her husband Sanford Gurian have lived in the Roanoke Valley since 1983.
